Microbial Biotechnology

Postgraduation qualifications in microbial biotechnology can lead to placements in pharmaceutical companies, in the chemical industry, in agriculture and allied industries as well as in research laboratories run by the government and the corporate sector. There are plenty of opportunities available in this field, one can be a Research Scientist, Teacher, Marketing manager, Science Writer, Quality Control Officer or Production in-charge in the Food, Chemical and Pharmaceutical industry, Analyst (Venture-Capitalist) Environmental / Safety Specialist etc. Areas of microbial biotechnology include specifically quality assurance for the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Microbial biotechnologists are also involved in biological control of diseases, remediation of polluted environments, waste water treatment, production of antimicrobials, enzymes, therapeutics, vaccines, vitamins, amino acids, and fermented foods (such as wine, vinegar, sprits, beer, cheese and sausages), the development of genetically modified bacteria and viruses, smart textile, health-promoting functional foods, and the design of molecular diagnostic tests to detect and study infectious diseases. They may also be responsible for discovery of new organisms and pathways.
Biotechnology

Biotechnology- technology to use the living things covers a wide variety of subjects with tremendous application in the field of health, agriculture, animal husbandry, pollution control and waste management. The setting up of a separate department of biotechnology (DBT) under the ministry of Science and Technology and All India Board of Biotechnology Education and Training under AICTE gave a new impetus in the development of biotechnology.
The five broad categories-biopharma, agro-biotech, bio-informatics, bio-industrial and bio services-that the biotech industry in India can be divided into are likely to become US$ 5 billion industry by 2010 (CII report). More than 40% of the total 325 biotechnology companies in India are in bio-pharma segment which are likely to touch overall revenue of US$4.6 billion by 2010-13.Fulled by the robust sale of BT cotton, the bio-agriculture sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry With a well developed R&D capability and a large patient base for clinical trials, the bioservices sector is another sector with great promise in medicine, vaccine and diagnostic.With strong growth in R&D production, the biosupplier industry is also on the growth path.
Botany
School of Botany

Bio-informatics

Bio-informatics involves integration of the computers, softwares, tools and databases in an effort to address biological questions. The ultimate goal of bio-informatics is to uncover the wealth of biological information hidden in the mass sequence, structure, literature, and other biological data and obtain a clearer insight into the fundamental biology of organisms and to use this information to enhance the standard of life for mankind. Bio-informatics could have profound impact on human health, agriculture, the environment, energy and bio-technology to advance bio-medical research and development. It is being now used in the areas of molecular medicine to help produce better and more customized medicine to prevent or cure diseases, it has environmental benefit in identifying waste, clean up bacteria and in agriculture it can be used for producing high yield low maintenance crop.
The career prospects in the field have been steadily increasing with more and more use of information technology in the field of molecular biology. Job opportunities are in all fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biomedical sciences, in research institutions hospital and industry.
